Dr Michael Chandler

The Very Revd Dr Michael John Chandler was instituted Dean of Ely in September 2003.

As Dean he oversees the running of the Cathedral and is head of the Chapter which manages its worship, finance and other affairs.

Before coming to Ely, Dr Chandler was a Residentiary Canon of Canterbury Cathedral, where since 1995, he served as Canon Treasurer, the chief financial officer.

After his ordination in 1972, Dr Chandler spent the next 23 years following a parish ministry in the Canterbury diocese.

His first Curacy was at St Dunstan’s Canterbury. Three years later he became Curate at St John’s, Margate. His next appointment was as Vicar of Newington from 1978 to 1988. From 1980 to 1988 he was also responsible for Hartlip and Stockbury, initially as Priest in Charge, but as Vicar from 1983. He was Rural Dean of Sittingbourne from 1984 to 1988. From 1988 to 1995 he was Rector of Hackington. He was rural Dean of Canterbury from 1994 to 1995.

Dr Chandler is married to Janet. They have two adult children and two grandchildren.

They enjoy walking and bird watching, and are members of the RSPB.

He has published three books on church history:

  • The Life and Work of John Mason Neale 1818-1866 in 1995
  • The Life and Work of Henry Parry Liddon 1829-1890 in 2000
  • An Introduction to the Oxford Movement in 2003
