Director of Ministry and Vocations
The Revd Canon Vanessa Herrick
The Revd Canon Vanessa Herrick has been Director of Ministry and Vocation and Director of Ordinands in the Diocese since 2003. She has responsibility for working with those wishing to explore a vocation to ordained ministry and for promoting vocations work, in its broadest sense, across the Diocese. In addition, Vanessa works closely with other colleagues in matters relating to ministry strategy, training and deployment.
Vanessa was formerly Chaplain and Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, and Tutor in Pastoral Theology at Ridley Hall Theological College, Cambridge. She has gained a breadth of experience over the past twenty years, as a lay person, clergy spouse, Reader and ordained minister.
She has worked with her husband, David (who is also ordained), in a variety of contexts - urban, city-centre, council estate and suburban village. She served her curacy as part of the clergy team at St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Suffolk.
Vanessa and David have two grown up sons. Her hobbies include long distance walking, bird-watching, cinema, theatre and contemporary arts.
She is co-author of several books on ministry, including:
- Jesus Wept: Reflections on Vulnerability in Leadership (DLT 1998 and new edition 2006)
- Take Up Your Cross: Daily Readings for Lent (a Lent Book for those in ministry published in November 2005, also DLT)
- She is a contributor to The Curate’s Guide: From calling to First Parish (CHP 2005)
