BOBS AND SINGLES IN PLAIN BOB MINOR

Plain LeadWithout a bob or a single (a "plain lead") when the treble is leading one bell strikes two blows in second's place ("makes seconds") and returns to the lead, which forces the bells behind it to take a step backwards, or dodge:

Making the bob/singleAt a bob AND at a single when the treble is leading, one bell strikes two blows in fourth's place ("makes fourths") and returns to the lead, which forces the bells behind it to dodge:

So, the bells dodging in 56 (or higher on larger numbers of bells) are unaffected. They will find that they meet the other bells in a different order after the call, but they still do the dodge they had expected to at the call (and at the next lead end).

The bell which makes fourths is the one which had been expecting to dodge 34 up. That's (quite) easy - but this bell also needs to know what to do at the next lead end. The answer is that it is starting the method again from fourth's place; what is the fourth's first dodge in a plain course?

Answer to question

The bells in between first's place and fourth's place can either: -

Cross overCross-over
Or make seconds and thirdsOr make seconds and thirds

AT A BOB both the bell expecting to make seconds, and the bell expecting to dodge 34 down ring plain hunt. Very easy - no dodge or place or anything until the next lead end. Known as "running out" and "running in". Since the treble is plain hunting as well, and dodges happen when the treble is leading, then at the next lead end you just do what you weren't allowed to do when the bob was called (i.e. make seconds or dodge 34 down), and carry on from there.

AT A SINGLE the bell making seconds was expecting to do just that, so like the bells dodging in 56 it is "unaffected".

The bell making thirds, however, was expecting to dodge 34 down. Instead it turns round in third's place, and picks up the method as if it had started a plain course as the third - so the next work is..?
