Bats and churches
Bats can be an issue for some churches. These are a rapidly declining group of animals that are rigorously protected by law. However, bats can damage ancient fabric and can feel a burden on parishes.
- Usually parishes can get advice from local bat groups (e.g. http://www.cambsbats.org.uk/)
- Parishes considering work that might affect bats should contact their county office of Natural England. They will need at least a letter from Natural England to accompany a Faculty Petition and may even need to apply for a bats and development licence.
- There is a helpful leaflet from Natural England (http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/)on the subject. Search for the leaflet which is entitled "Bats in Churches: a management guide." Their website explains the rules over licences involving bats.
