Environment and sustainable development

Social justice and the environment are very closely linked. Often environmental problems have a greater impact on the poor of the world than on the rich. For example the report "Up in Smoke" (available from the
websites of development agencies like

Christian Aid

Their main site is at www.christianaid.org.uk/climatechange/. http://www.christianaid.org.uk/indepth/410smoke/index.htm) explains how climate change will make the Millennium Development Goals unobtainable. Christian Aid has written its own report "The Climate of Poverty" www.christianaid.org.uk/indepth/605caweek/index.htm

Christian Aid have several other papers on the environment on their 'in-depth" section www.christianaid.org.uk/indepth/environm.htm and their "climate change" section

The development agencies often highlight environmental concerns.

Tearfund

has their main British page on the subject at Climate change and disasters. They also have some international briefing papers at Climate change policy. They are running an amusing but hard-hitting campaign for local churches at Derek

Currently CAFOD is running the Unearth Justice campaign on mining etc www.cafod.org.uk/get_involved/campaigning/unearth_justice. CAFOD also have resources for schools on the environment and development.

Development agencies and environmental groups and others have combined to form "Stop Climate Chaos" www.stopclimatechaos.org which is a site well worth a visit

Another important site is the Environmental Justice Foundation www.ejfoundation.org/

An interesting group helping young people to get engaged in this area is Roots and Shoots (founded by Jane Goodall) www.rootsandshoots.org/
