Independence Day – 15th August
Independence Day is an important date in the calendar for all Indians as it commemorates the day in 1947 when the British formally handed the government of India back to the people of the country after more than a century of Imperial rule. 15th August is a public holiday and most organisations will hold a flag raising ceremony which includes the official raising of the flag of India and the singing of the national anthem. The photographs on this page are from the celebrations which took place at Sipcot Church School in 2006 and show the speeches, the prayers and the displays by pupils.
