GET A LIFE! A five-Session Course on Calling for Young People

This follow-on from the popular Youth Emmaus books is an exciting new course for young people. Get a Life! approaches some of the big questions that 13-18 year-olds face in their secondary school years, including issues of vocation, calling, gifts, passions and the big question that many young people dread being asked: ‘What do you want to do with your life?’.

Written in an accessible manner, the five sessions draw on contemporary culture and include interactive material to explore the issues and themes of calling, gifts and service.

Ideal for 13-18 year olds who are making big decisions about the future, as a pre- or post-confirmation course, as a Lent course, or as an after school series.

Includes fully photocopiable handouts.

MIXING IT UP WITH FOOTBALL

In 10 sessions, this book tackles some of the central Christian beliefs using the features of football to help your youth group connect with the theological message in terms they can relate to – from Fans (God’s Great Love for us) to Team Tactics (the Church as a Body) – with an introduction to the book covering all you need to consider in terms of health and safety, child protection, and how to handle the aspects of football culture that are not always very godly.

Mixing it up with Football will help young people to engage with their faith with the same enthusiasm with which they hit the football pitch!

Each session is divided into five parts and includes photocopiable material:

  • Beforehand (to help leaders prepare the session)
  • Opening Activity (introducing the session to the young people in an interactive and fun format)
  • Football Focus (exploring the theme for the session, discussion and feedback)
  • Bible Focus (a Bible verse that deals with the Christian perspective of the theme)
  • Prayer Response (prayer activity drawing on the theme and giving space for response

MIXING IT UP WITH HARRY POTTER

In 12 sessions, Mixing it up with Harry Potter draws parallels between events in the Harry Potter world, and the world in which our young people live. These parallels allow you to explore Christian concepts with your young people and engage with the Christian faith through the themes demonstrated – from complex subjects such as Sacrifice and Mercy, to everyday issues such as Fitting in and Boasting – with an introduction to the book covering all you need to consider in terms of health and safety, child protection, and how to handle the aspects of Harry Potter that are not always very godly.

Mixing it up with Harry Potter will help young people to delight in their faith and encourage them to see that a relationship with God is even more enchanting than a visit to Hogwarts!

Each session is divided into five parts and includes photocopiable material:

  • Beforehand (to help leaders prepare the session)
  • Opening Activity (introducing the session to the young people in an interactive and fun format)
  • Film Clip (a short clip from one of the Harry Potter films)
  • Taking It Further (developing the theme and exploring it in greater depth)

Mixing it up with The Simpsons uses extracts from episodes to help your youth group connect with key Christian beliefs in a contemporary format – from Lisa the Beauty Queen (issues of self-image) to Homer and Barney (the importance of friendship) – with an introduction to the book covering all you need to consider in terms of health and safety, child protection, and how to handle the aspects of The Simpsons that are not always very godly.

COLLECTED TOGETHER

Written by David Waters, this resource book offers forty outlines for youth group meetings and collective worship that can be used in whole school, class or group settings. It also offers material for church youth group worship and youth group discussions. Drawing on every day illustrations these outlines are ideal for clergy, youth leaders, busy teachers and worship leaders as they need almost no advance preparation. Major events in the church year are featured including Palm Sunday, Easter, Harvest, Advent and Christmas.

MISSION-SHAPED YOUTH

Following on from Mission-shaped Church, this book examines what it means to have a 'youth-mission-shaped church'. It challenges us to intersect with today's young people in their daily lives and culture. The authors urge us to offer a mission that isn't just about evangelism, but is also about supporting pastorally and spiritually.

Using case studies and discussion starters, Mission-shaped Youth examines school- and congregation-based projects, projects involving young people outside the church, and creative ways of engaging young people with prayer and sacraments. It also considers the challenges and encouragements for the wider Church and looks at what is emerging for the future.

HAPPY IN MY SKIN

An invaluable resource for the training of new workers in youth ministry and especially for those working in areas where there are increasing numbers of young people from minority ethnic groups. Simon Bell explores the issue of social justice and finding God's heart for those who have been marginalised from the life of the church. With contributions from practitioners working with Black, Asian and Traveller communities

YOUNG PEOPLE + MISSION

This book challenges us to step out of our youth work comfort zones and consider what is meant by ‘mission’. Is it more than just evangelism? Should we do mission for the young people or with them?

Structured around three main sections – Mission through the local church, Beyond the church walls and Rethinking young people and mission – Young People and Mission approaches its topics candidly, grappling with subjects that include helping teenagers to share their faith, ecology and mission, living in a multi-faith society and making the most of a gap year.

Challenging, practical, informative and insightful, Young People and Mission will help us to re-think the way we do mission with and to young people – inside and outside the church.

YOUNG PEOPLE + WORSHIP

From using image and film as worship aids to rethinking the rites and rituals of worship, this book, written by a range of experienced practitioners, contains an insightful mix of theology, case studies, practical information and questions to help churches rethink the way that they engage young people in worship.

This is a thought-provoking read full of new ideas, key principles and inspiration for connecting young people with worship and developing their spirituality. Young People and Worship challenges the myths and clichés, emphasizes that there is no ‘one size fits all’ worship, and encourages youth workers to build up lifelong worshippers who will stay beyond their teenage years.
