But first, what is an archdeacon?
An archdeacon is responsible for administration of an archdeaconry, which is the principal subdivision of the diocese. It is a senior position, above that of most clergy and below a bishop. An archdeacon is in charge of temporal and other affairs in a diocese, with powers delegated from the diocesan bishop.
An archdeacon is styled The Venerable (The Ven) instead of the usual clerical style The Reverend (The Revd).

The position of Archdeacon can be held by either a man or a woman.
