Woodland Burials

The Bishop of Ely, Dr Anthony Russell
Barton Glebe
The Arbory Trust

With growing pressure on the environment, and with the rising cost of conventional funerals, many people are now looking at woodland burial as a alternative.

The Arbory Trust's woodland burial site creates a lasting natural memorial as well as being a wildlife haven. It is situated just west of Cambridge between Barton and Comberton.

The burial ground was consecrated in 2002 and welcomes all people, regardless of race or religion. The use of headstones is not permitted, but graves may be marked by bio-degradable wooden plaques in the first few years.

The woodland has been landscaped in such a way as to create woodland glades for the burials. At present over 100 people are buried there and a similar number have already reserved grave spaces. The burial grounds will eventually be expanded to cover 40 acres.

Everybody who works for the Arbory Trust has been given training in bereavement counselling, because we recognise that when we lose people that we love, we are understandably very vulnerable.

The Arbory Trust (a non-profit making organisation) is a Christian Foundation, chaired by the Bishop of Ely.
