Is vocation always about individuals?

No. God calls groups of people to follow him as well. The people of Israel were called – together – to leave captivity in Egypt and journey to the Promised Land; the early church was called by God to ‘make disciples of all nations’, to live in community and to witness together to his saving love (1 Corinthians 1.1-9).

Sometimes groups of Christians have been called together for a particular purpose – such as the Taizé Community in France, the Corrymeela Community in Northern Ireland or the dissenting Church in Germany during the Second World War.

It is important to remember that individual, personal vocation is always discerned and exercised within the wider community of the Church: there is a sense in which every vocation is part of the Church’s bigger, corporate vocation. What matters is that the Church is listening – together – to God, as well as individuals.
