Bishop to confirm 82 year old at home
The Bishop of Ely, Stephen Conway, will stop by at Ness Court Sheltered Housing complex in Burwell, Cambridge on Saturday afternoon (May 7th) to confirm 82 year old Vera Scrutton, the former landlady of the Royal Oak pub in Swaffham Bulbeck.
Bishop Conway will be on his way to officiate at a nearby Deanery Confirmation, but when he heard that Vera had decided to take this huge step of faith and would be better off being confirmed in her own home, the Bishop didn’t hesitate for a moment.
“It’s wonderful that Vera has made this decision and I understand that lots of neighbours and friends want to be there to support her,” the Bishop said today.
“We have put together and order of service which follows the usual order but tries to keep things brief enough to avoid undue demands,” said Revd Eleanor Williams, Vicar of Burwell with Reach.
Vera has recently written a book about her life, called Blind Bob, reflecting on their time in Swaffham Bulbeck where Bob, her husband, was blind for most of the time they were there.
“It’s going to be a great day for everyone concerned and we are delighted that Bishop Stephen has agreed to come along and to make Vera’s day!” added Eleanor today.
