Bishop's Adviser for Self-Supporting Ministry
The Revd Peter Taylor
The Bishop of Huntingdon appointed the Revd Peter Taylor as Bishop’s Adviser for Self-Supporting Ministry, with effect from 1st October 2010.
The number of clergy engaged in self-supporting ministry (SSM) has increased significantly in recent years and continues to grow. Each person’s situation is different, but the common feature is that they exercise their ministry without payment or stipend. As a consequence they are sometimes called Non-Stipendiary Ministers (NSM).
There are currently around 50 SSMs in the Diocese of Ely, ranging from those whose main focus of ministry is their place of work (MSE - Minister in Secular Employment) to those who are able to offer self-funded, full-time parochial ministry. The majority combine some form of secular employment (part-time or full-time, paid or voluntary) with part-time, unpaid parish ministry.
The role of the Adviser is to help the Diocese affirm the value of self-supporting ministry. Among other things, the Adviser acts as a point of contact for self-supporting ministers and for matters relating to this relatively new form of ministry.
Peter, who is honorary Priest-in-charge of Coveney and Rural Dean of Ely, succeeds the Revd Teresa Dixon in this role. Peter trained and served his title back in the 70s and left stipendiary parish ministry to become a Minister in Secular Employment, working predominately in the field of audio-visual production. Now retired from paid employment, he relies on his wife, Polly, who works as a Consultant in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, to keep him in the manner to which he is accustomed. They have lots of horses, a handful of sheep, two dogs and two cats. They also have a grown-up daughter who is currently studying for a Research Masters in Psychology at Bath.
