A message from the Treasurer - The Ministry ShareThe biggest expense we have in our church is the Ministry Share. Over the last few years, the way this is worked out has changed radically; the idea being to make it a fairer system for all. The Ministry Share (its full title is Cost of Ministry Share) pays mainly for the Rector of St Mary Magdalene’s costs of employment, with an amount also going towards other costs within the Diocese of Ely. It is paid monthly to the Diocesan Board of Finance, and our total amount for 2010 is £46,531 (£4,653 monthly over 10 months). At the moment, along with a few other parishes, we are in a transitional phase and are not paying our full Cost of Ministry Share. The Deanery Treasurer tries to work out a fair payment for each parish including also a Health and Wealth rating, which is set by the Diocese; Brampton is counted as a fairly wealthy village. At the moment we would struggle to pay our full Ministry Share so we are being gradually eased into it by the Deanery Treasurer. The full cost for this year should actually be £61,309. As the Deanery Treasurer has to make the books balance, other parishes in effect subsidise those who are unable to pay the full amount. So sometimes a Parish will be able to pay more than their share and sometimes less. Some years ago, St Mary Magdalene’s was able to help others. If parishes pay their Ministry Share by direct debit, then the Diocese has a regular flow of income and does not have to borrow money to pay salaries and other costs; therefore a 2 ½% discount is paid to those Parishes who manage to pay their Parish Share by this method. We will hopefully be eligible for this discount with next year’s payments. Our monthly income averages at around £4,985 so you can see why we struggle to make our budget balance. At each monthly meeting of the Church Council we are constantly reviewing our current position. http://www.ely.anglican.org/information/finance/ministry_share.html (written a few years ago) gives more information. In future, I’ll explain more about the different funds we hold. Linda
