St Martin's Men's Ministry Weekend Away 2009

The Lake District - Grasmere Extravaganza 26th - 29th June 2009

Next year sees St Martin's Men return to Cumbria, in a new venue - Grasmere. Once home to the poet William Wordsworth, the Grasmere Valley provides some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District with opportunities for sightseeing, relaxing by 'quiet waters' and mountain walking to suit all tastes. The valley houses the village of Grasmere and of course the two lakes; Grasmere and Rydal Water. Image 2

Surrounding every side are the fells - great and small but all offering their own unique views. To the west lie the imposing Langdale Pikes, whilst east is Rydal Fell and beyond the famous Fairfield Horseshoe. North is the exciting mountain that is Hellvellyn, whilst south is picturesque Loughrigg, overlooking Lake Windermere.

Still not convinced this is a weekend not to be missed? Read on.

This year our advance scouting party secured the most palatial accommodation the Men's Group has ever stayed in - a far cry from the early days of tents and mud!

The term hostel does Broadrayne Farm an injustice. Purpose built in June 2000 and graded by the English Tourism Council as a 4-star hostel.

The hostel is on a traditional Lakeland farm nestling at the foot of the Helvellyn Range, with direct access to many classic walks including the Coast-to-Coast foot path.

The hostel is just over 1 mile from Grasmere village and only 70 metres off the main north-south road through the Lakes.

The hostel

In addition to a large dining room, two (yes two) kitchens and an upstairs lounge with stunning views, there are 5 bedrooms (4 with en suite facilities including showers). There are additional showers, a drying room with boot racks, laundry facilities and even a nordic sauna (coin operated).

This year you will NOT need to bring any bedding as all beds are made up with under-fleece, polycotton sheets, duvets and pillows; extra pillows and blankets are under the beds.

Beds have bedside lights and power points are provided for those who need to charge their mobile phones etc. There are individual lockers (big enough for a rucksack).

You will need to bring your own towels, but if you forget you can hire one at the hostel.

There is a private car park adjacent to the hostel.

Meals

Once again we have been fortunate to persuade Jean Sexton to provide the evening meals for Friday and Saturday. Sunday we will eat out at a local pub.

As for the last 2 years you will be expected to bring your own high energy snack meal ingredients for the days out.

Cost

From the above information you will realize this year the hostel is rather luxurious and hence there is an increased cost of £70 for the weekend. In addition there will be around £25 for transport.

A few possible walking options to whet your appetite
