COLLEGESMost colleges have their own chapels, with a Dean or Chaplain or both. The Deans and Chaplains web site, www.christiancambridge.org, is a good starting point for news, articles and links to local churches as well as to college chapels.UNIVERSITY STAFFThe Chaplain to University Staff is based at the University Church, Great St Mary's. This position is currently vacant, but other members of the team at GSM will respond to enquiries until a successor is in post.CHAPLAINCY ON THE WEST CAMBRIDGE SITEMerton Hall Farmhouse provides prayer and meeting space (including a kitchen) for members of any faith or none working on the West Cambridge site.DENOMINATIONAL CHAPLAINCIESA number of city centre churches offer student activities and pastoral support, and details are on www.christiancambridge.org. Special mention should be made of Fisher House, the Cambridge University Catholic Chaplaincy, which has its own building in Guildhall Street, with a wide range of activities.OTHER FAITHSJewish chaplaincy work, with an extensive cultural, social and educational programme, is based at Thompson's Lane synagogue and the Culanu centre at 33 Bridge Street. Daniel Silverstein runs the Culanu Centre and Rabbi Ori Fish was appointed in September 2004 as Jewish chaplain.There is a Muslim chaplain, John Butt, and an active Islamic Society. There is a prayer room above the University Accommodation Office in Mill Lane, and Friday prayers are held at Queens' College. Muslims also use the multi-faith prayer room at Merton Hall Farmhouse on the West Cambridge site. The Cambridge Mosque is on Mawson Street, off Mill Road. A part-time Hindu chaplain has recently appointed. There are a number of faith-based student societies, and a Faiths Council was set up in Summer 2005. See the Cambridge University Societies index. ANGLIA POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITYFinally, students and staff at APU (Anglia Polytechnic University) have their own Chaplaincy web site. With Anglican and Free Church chaplains moving on in summer 2004, the APU chaplaincy is in a state of flux, but the new chaplain, Nigel Scott Cooper, will take up his appointment early in the new year. |
