Great St Mary's now has an email list on the diocesan server, for discussion and announcements of anything specifically relevant to the parish.
Please feel welcome to join this list, and to start and continue discussions on any aspect of our parish life, and to make announcements of parish events.
The list is currently used very little, and it won't flood your mailbox.
The list is maintained automatically, using a system called majordomo, which you operate by sending command to it in email messages.
To join the list, send a message to majordomo@ely.anglican.org with
subscribe gsm-list
in the message body. The server will add you to the list, and send you a message giving further instructions.
Once you're on the list, you can send messages to gsm-list@ely.anglican.org, and the server will send them to everyone on the list.
Replies to messages you receive on the list will automatically go to everyone on the list. If you wish to reply privately to someone, your mailer may have a separate command for "reply to sender only".
The procedure for leaving a list is similar to that for joining it, but with the command unsubscribe instead of subscribe.
There is also a list on the same server, called ely-list, for things specific to the diocese. ely-list typically runs at between none and ten messages per day. For those for whom this is too much mail, there is also announce (on the same server) for announcements by diocesan officials only. To join either of these, follow the instructions above but substituting for gsm-list the name of the list you want. If you join ely-list but not announce you will miss out on the annoucements -- they ely-list does not automatically include the announcements.
For more general discussions of Christianity, there is a general mailing list on the COIN server, described (with joining instructions) at http://www.coin.org.uk/resources/mail.html. general is quite a busy list, with tens of messages daily, on all sorts of subjects related to Christianity. It is UK-based and ecumenical.
To find who is on a list, send a message to the majordomo with the command
who gsm-list
(or whatever the list name is). A list of people will be returned to you by email.
For contacts (some of them emailable) for specific purposes, see Who's who at Great St Mary's.
