The Faith in Society group of Great St Mary's
This year we have kept to our established pattern of mixing
discussions led by visiting speakers, and evenings when one of our own
members provides the initial stimulus. Before Christmas we had:
- Augur Pearce - What is a Christian?
- Mark Pryce: Masculinity and Spirituality
- Paul Cornish: An Ethical Foreign Policy
- Dan Hardy: Pastoral Theology
- Kerry Ramsay: Feminist Theology
In January we embarked on a sequence of four meetings on the theme of
Faith in Youth. Colleen McLaughlin talked about the psychology and
morality of contemporary teenagers. Alison McRobb followed with Moral
Education. And in March we had a fascinating presentation by two
highly articulate teenagers, Richard Davey and Lucy Turner. For the
last evening in this series we have invited Paul Taylor, Minister for
Youth at St Barnabas, and Gavin Collins, Deanery Youth Officer. The
papers coming out of this `project' will be assembled and passed to
the Worship and Education Committee for their consideration.
Rather than just tell you how successful this programme has been, I
have collected some comments from the other members:
- `Faith in Society - this is a fundamental and ongoing challenge - it is wonderful to
have a forum to discuss and explore this.'
- `A chance to meet interesting people!'
- `I have enjoyed being in a group of thoughtful
people who take Christianity seriously but are not afraid to express
ignorance or doubt or to disagree, but where everyone's views are
respected. I like the way we have tried to look at the whole of our
lives, not separating the sacred from the secular.'
- `The evenings are fun, exciting, and different from anything else I do.'
- `Most interesting theological group in Cambridge?'
