This famous and historic organ was completed by Bernard (`Father') Smith in 1696 and from that time preserves its magnificent case and at least ten ranks of its original pipes. Originally of two manuals, a third manual was added early in the 18th century, and further additions were made to the organ in 1767-8, 1804, and 1807. In 1819 the organ was resited in the present West Gallery. Then followed 50 years of neglect, until the restoration by William Hill in 1870. After this, the organ remained largely untouched until 1963, when the firm of Hill, Norman and Beard undertook a conservative and largely sympathetic restoration, while adding a few new stops and a modern pedal-board. The organ was thoroughly restored by N. P. Mander Ltd in 1995/96 with the intention of restoring all surviving historic pipework while consolidating the predominantly Hill characteristics of the sound.
