The Wider Concerns committee of Great St Mary's

This past year has been a bit of an `up and a downer' as far as the Wider Concerns Committee is concerned. The `up' side has been the success of our various appeals during the year, raising £2,500 at Easter for a well at St Luke's Church in Gambella; and £1,828.60 at Harvest for refugees, women in prison in Thailand and for Jane Hunt's projects in Peshawar. In addition £2,470 was raised at Christmas for the work of The Corrymeela Community in Northern Ireland and Medical Support in Romania. We have also been put on a better financial footing by the PCC which will enable us to support some projects on a more regular basis.

The `down' side of the past year has been the lack of committee members. David Hollier's death was a very sad loss to us all as he had taken over the Link Africa Project which he had originally initiated. Bridget le Huray's decision to return to Malawi under the auspices of USPG in January this year, meant we lost a very hard working convenor who kept us all on our toes.

But things are looking up again as we have welcomed some new members. I would also like to say a big thank you to all my hard working colleagues who have helped to keep things going during a difficult period.

Great St Mary's and Amnesty International

Great St Mary's sends off letters of support in cases of Urgent Action, signed by members of the congregation and clergy. Occasionally we get letters back updating us with action taken in some cases of human rights abuse and unlawful killings. We also ask people to support these cases with prayers.

Amnesty's website gives more information about these cases.
