St Johns Sunday School

St Johns aims to be very welcoming to families, and young people will find a particularly warm welcome in our Sunday School. We have a membership that is typically around 40-50 members, who work in four age groups.

Sunday School takes place during the main 10 am service. We start together for a short time introduction and to sing a couple of worship songs. We join the main church at the Peace before Communion, and remain in the church until after we have either received the sacrament or a blessing. St Johns welcomes children to receive the sacrament before Confirmation.

This page is deliberately light on details: we hope that the pictures tell their own story. For more written details, we have two downloadable documents:

  1. Download the Sunday School policy document (pdf format). Print this on two sides of an A4 sheet of paper to get the document in folded A5 brochure format.
  2. Download our policy on Communion prior to Confirmation (pdf format).

We also make our Christmas Nativity plays available free for download.

Posing at one of our parties. You will see below that parties are a strong feature of Sunday School!

Before we get too serious on this page, here is the first of a set of party pictures. Food is a strong feature!

We hold a party at the end of the summer term and in the new year. In the summer we can go outside and race with water!

But we do have a serious game in the summer party: we look for words hidden in the garden. When put together they form a verse from the Bible that provides the final thought of the year. Invariably we don't quite find all the words: one of the mysteries is what happens to these lost words from our Bible verses!

Now to serious stuff: one of the classes working on a craft.

In this picture we are working from the course booklets. The Sunday School follows the course prepared by the Scripture Union.

The Sunday School leads one or two family services each year, and traditionally leads the Christmas morning family service with a Nativity presentation.

A group of angels and shepherds gathered on stage at the end of the Christmas production.

Members of the Sunday School form a group to lead the music at family services and Christmas.

St Johns Sunday School helps support a teenage boy in Kenya called Robert, through money that members bring each week. We help pay for Robert to receive a proper education, with meals. We are delighted to get updates on his progress, and to learn how well he is doing.
