ORGAN Project

Existing West wall

View looking westwards from the chancel step, showing the present door leading to the tower and the 14th century arch which has at some time been filled with a studding partition.

The original Fisher case will be restored to its former glory. It will be supported by a new lower case made from European oak which will house the re-built organ. This will match the original as closely as possible. The console, also of oak, has been designed by the organ builder, Peter Bumstead, to be stylistically appropriate to the case. The stops are to be arranged in a single column either side of the keyboards, with square drawstop rods and rosewood knobs of the pattern characteristic of J C Bishop’s work. The stop labels are to be of a synthetic material (in the absence of ivory) engraved in Roman lettering.

Internally the organ will assume the simple and logical layout of a classical English organ: the Great Organ will be accommodated at about impost level, with the Swell directly above it; both will be within the confines of the original case. The Choir will be behind the Great and at a slightly higher level, with the bellows beneath it. The largest pedal pipes will be accommodated at the back of the organ on the gallery floor; the smaller ones will be mounted on two new soundboards either side of the console, and also on the gallery floor.

Proposed design for relocated

Artist’s impression of the gallery restored case and rebuilt organ in place. The door and paneling below the gallery match the natural oak of the gallery itself. Access to the gallery is by a wrought-iron spiral staircase to the right of the centre aisle.
