The parish began to raise the money for a Nave Altar as a Millennium project. The Altar has been built with great skill by Ormsby's of Scarrisbrick. In its simplicity of line and delicate adornment it blends beautifully with the magnificent Rood Screen behind, which was designed by Sir Ninian Comper.
The new nave altar was dedicated on Sunday 18 August 2002. Bishop Edwin Barnes, President of the Guild of All Souls (the patron of the living), and formerly Bishop of Richborough, presided at the Eucharist and dedicated the new altar table, blessing it with water and incense and anointing it with oil. The Bishop is shown standing behind the new altar in the picture above.
A bequest from Mrs Betty Stiles enabled the altar to be set on a dais, accompanied by chairs for the priests and altar servers. These chairs have been made in the same wood as the altar. New candlesticks and a missal stand were given in memory of Mr Ted Fearing who served this church for over 80 years day in and day out.
